What do I need to register my skis or snowboard?

To register gear with Ski Board Registry, you’ll need to create an account.

  • One registration is included with membership ($9.99/year)

  • Each additional ski or snowboard registered within the same household is $4.99 per item

The item must be your property and have a legible serial number.

You’ll need to provide:

  • Serial number

  • Brand, model, length, and bindings (if mounted)

  • One full-length photo of the item (horizontal recommended)

  • One clear photo showing the serial number


What if my ski or snowboard does not have a serial number?

You can still register gear without a serial number if you have proof of purchase (such as a receipt or bill of sale).

How to request a Special ID:

  1. Create an account.

  2. Go to Order Special ID.

  3. Select View CartProceed to Checkout.

  4. Before placing your order, check “Add note to your order” and enter your email with a message such as:
    “Requesting contact for proof of purchase.”

  5. Once your proof of purchase is verified, we will issue a Special ID and mail your label.

  6. After applying the Special ID label, upload the required photos and complete registration as usual.


What do the stickers do? Do I need one?

Stickers are optional and available to active subscribers.

  • They visibly indicate your skis or snowboard are registered

  • They may help deter theft

  • They help anyone who finds your gear know it is registered and searchable

Stickers are made of durable, weather-resistant vinyl designed for outdoor conditions.


How do I apply stickers or Special ID labels to my skis or snowboard?

  1. Choose a smooth area on the top sheet with minimal interference

  2. Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol and allow it to dry

  3. Peel the backing without touching the adhesive (tweezers help)

  4. Apply the label and press firmly several times

  5. Optional: For rough or textured surfaces, apply a thin layer of clear nail polish, allow it to fully dry, then apply the label

Placement tips:

  • Under or near ski bindings

  • In front of or behind track bindings

  • On snowboards, choose a low-interference area where boots won’t rub


How do I mark my skis or snowboard as missing/lost/stolen?

  1. Log in and go to View My Gear in your account dashboard
  2. Select the item and change its status to Missing / Lost / Stolen
  3. Enter the date reported and last known location
  4. Save your changes

Once flagged, your contact information will appear if someone searches for the item, allowing them to reach out directly.

What do I do if my missing/lost/stolen item is found?

We recommend coordinating returns in a public place or police station for safety.

If the finder is not local, consider using a shipping service with tracking.

Ski Board Registry does not facilitate returns — we provide the connection between the owner and the finder.


Why use Ski Board Registry? Aren’t there other tracking options?

  • Ski Board Registry works similarly to a pet microchip — it does not track gear in real time, but it provides verifiable ownership information that can help reunite found equipment with its rightful owner.

    • Bluetooth trackers and AirTags can be removed and rely on nearby devices

    • GPS trackers are bulky, require charging, and often involve subscription fees

    Most skis and snowboards already have serial numbers. Registering those numbers provides a simple, cost-effective, and maintenance-free way to establish ownership and improve recovery odds.

    Ski Board Registry was created in 2025 after extensive research into how lost and stolen gear is handled — and often not recovered — within the snow sports community.


Does insurance cover lost, missing, or stolen skis and snowboards?

Insurance coverage for skis and snowboards varies by policy, but many standard homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover gear that is lost, left behind, or stolen while outside the home — such as at a resort, lodge, parking lot, or during travel.

Even when coverage exists, policies often include:

  • High deductibles

  • Coverage limits below the replacement cost of modern gear

  • Exclusions for unattended property

  • Requirements for police reports or proof of ownership

Because of these limitations, many skiers and snowboarders discover after an incident that recovery or reimbursement options are limited or unavailable.

Ski Board Registry is not an insurance product and does not replace insurance. Instead, it provides verifiable proof of ownership that can help identify gear, support recovery if it is found, and document ownership in situations where insurance or law enforcement requests verification.

Registration adds an extra layer of protection and documentation that many insurance policies do not provide on their own.


What do I do if I sell my skis or board that I have registered?

    1. Log in and go to View My Gear

    2. Select the item and change its status to Sold

    3. Enter the date reported and save

    You may then register a new set in its place.
